STAR TREK
I saw this last night. I liked it... but I can see why Trekkies/Trekkers/whatever wouldn't. I didn't appreciate the "comedy" early on. Giant hands, oh, that's funny. I also didn't appreciate Karl Urban chewing up the scenery. Other than that: Explosions! Space ships! Green boobs! Reading from the writers sewed up some holes as well.

Re: STAR TREK
I'm getting that Watchmen vibe about the movie now. When I walked out of Watchmen, I thought it was an almighty fuck up, but on reflection the things I liked I really liked, and I was glad it was made. I wanted to watch it again, and was happy to gloss over the flaws to enjoy the visual aspect.
I kind of feel that way about Star Trek now, because I really liked how it looked and felt, and I enjoyed the performances and some of the concepts. I still don't think it's as good as the reviews say (and again it's not a Trekkie thing - half the plot is contrived bullshit! The villain about one scene to explain his motivation! Cadet to Captain in three days!) but I don't hate it.

Re: STAR TREK
Yeah, parts of it were kinda rushed like that.
I think if they do another one (and I'm sure they will), it'll probably have better pacing... I can see how a couple of TV guys could have trouble pacing a movie.

Re: STAR TREK
Yeah, see I'd like to see a sequel, because I like this vision of the Star Trek universe, but it just needs to not have a bunch of silly time travel stuff that takes up half the movie's running time!

Re: STAR TREK
Yeah, it'll be good to get on with things now that the universe has been established. IMDB says a sequel is coming in 2011.
