After learning that the wolf Fenris would one day kill Odin, the gods realized that they must bind the beast. Fenris, son of Loki, broke through even the strongest of chains, so the gods tasked the dwarves with creating a binding so strong not even Fenris could break free.
The dwarves provided the gods with the magical ribbon Gleipnir, made from the sound of a cat's footfall, the beard of a woman, the roots of a mountain, the sinews of a bear, the breath of a fish, and the spittle of a bird, thus removing these from the universe.
Distrusting that the gods would untie him should he be unable to free himself, Fenris decided to test the gods and attempt to secure his release. Fenris agreed to be bound by Gleipnir only if one of the gods would place his hand inside Fenris's mouth, assuring that they would free him, lest one lose his hand.
Knowing that Fenris must be bound at any cost, only the brave Tyr stepped forward, placing his hand in the mouth of the beast. Fenris was bound and unable to break free. The gods refused to let him loose, leaving Fenris to struggle. All the gods laughed heartily, save Tyr, whose hand was bitten off by Fenris, creating his wolf joint.
Tyr is destined to eventually destroy and be destroyed by the guard dog of Hel, Garm.
