Backstory:

Years ago, Darkness was a member of a clandestine order of demon-hunting warrior monks called the Shadow Slayers. He was something of a prodigy, but eventually left the Order to start a family after an extremely taxing mission that required him to break out of prison. Unfortunately, Darkness's time as a Shadow Slayer had left him with powerful enemies, and it wasn't long until Lucifer himself tracked him down and killed his wife Anna and young daughter, Krissy. Shattered by the loss of his newly-won life, Darkness swore to redeem himself by hunting down Lucifer and dying in combat with him, and his quest led him to 411fed, a nexus of supernatural activity.

Darkness's rise in the fed was meteoric, and he captured the Unified World Championship within nine months and spent his entire rookie year undefeated. He also amassed even more enemies along the way, most notably Jason Dante, who had been drawn to Darkness's mentions of Lucifer. Dante was a former member of the Hellfire Club and the protege of the demon Bleeder and took exception to his challenge. The two men engaged in an epic rivalry that resulted in Dante capturing the World Titles from him at Endgame 2006. However, the two men became united when they realised that there was more at stake than the battle between Heaven and Hell: a third faction known as The Abyss had emerged and was waging war in Hell. After their match, Dante and Darkness joined forces with several other members of the (newly named) TCW, forming the New Hellfire Club as Darkness had finally met Lucifer and been told by him that he was the Antichrist, with infernal heritage – much like Dante, who it transpired was actually Lucifer's son.

Darkness and Dante constantly oscillated between being friends and antagonists, leading to a renewed rivalry in 2007 that again culminated at Endgame. The War in Hell had drawn to a devastating close, with Lucifer betraying and killing the Archangel Michael and handing Hell over to The Abyss. Lucifer's betrayal tainted Darkness's soul in the process, turning him against Dante and Freya, another member of the New Hellfire Club. In the process of this second feud with his counterpart, Darkness lost his hand when Dante blew it off with a bolt of pure Hellfire, trying to stop him killing Kermit Gambono in cold blood. Dante and Darkness finally put aside their differences fighting against an invading army of vampires called the Ordo Draco led by a former Shadow Slayer named Dragon (who was not-coincidentally killed by Darkness years before) in Las Vegas. Afterwards, Darkness renewed his ties with the Shadow Slayers, becoming their leader (known as The First). In the match at Endgame, Darkness was victorious this time, recapturing the World Championships.

Over the following year, Commissioner Stern spent her time attempting to drum Darkness and Freya out of TCW. While they were Champions, she couldn't fire them, so she brought in a series of challengers to try and stop him, but none were successful. Throughout this time, Darkness continued to fight supernatural threats in his private life, now aided by a dozen werewolf bodyguards known as The Children and a half-vampire girl called Revenant. His most dangerous foes are now The Apocalypse, a group of soulless human mutants called Faithless led by the terrifying Lord Abortion, in reality an ancient vampire named Skaar. As the final battle for the fate of the universe draws closer, it has become clear that it will take the form of a confrontation between Darkness, Champion of Light and Skarr, Champion of the Void.

Darkness continues his wrestling career in an attempt to create support for his secret cause. He is trying to be a hero, an inspiration to the masses, which he believes he can do by using pro. wrestling to tap into something primal in his fans. It may have backfired though: some of his fans have taken things too far, mutilating themselves and donning smeared face paint in imitation of their idol. They have taken the name 'Darklings' for themselves and are led by a mysterious man known as Kyle Knight who appears to be a vampire.

At the same time, as the acknowledged Antichrist and focus of the world's hidden supernatural underbelly, Darkness is hunted by mundane factions who think he is dangerous. These include the American government and their conservative Christian president Stephen MacDonald who have chased TCW to China and, until recently, an organisation of ordinary humans dedicated to preserving the status quo known as The Balance.

As mankind's champion, Darkness carries the weight of the world on his shoulders, but he may be losing his grip on the very humanity he is sworn to protect. The Abyss grows stronger every day, their insane god Apophis, imprisoned in a near-Earth asteroid getting closer and closer to freedom, and his list of allies grows thin. The horrible truth may be that wrestling is the only thing keeping him sane, and even his fellow wrestlers want him out of the picture...

Coincidentally (or not), Darkness is an incarnation of Azrael, the Angel of Death. No one knows this, but it's important.

Personality: Brooding, serious and intense, Darkness is aloof around strangers but often witty and sarcastic with his allies. He has a dry sense of humour and almost never laughs. To people not in his supernatural world he can come across as condescending and cryptic, earning him the ire of many of his colleagues. He is extremely dedicated to his duty as the designated hero of humanity and wouldn't know how to take a holiday if he wanted to. He's loyal to his friends and kind to children, but does not suffer fools gladly and takes no prisoners in the ring.

Powers: Darkness has a number of supernatural abilities related to his various unusual origins. As a Shadow Slayer, he is able to use the Slayer Sense, a form of extrasensory perception that allows him to detect supernatural creatures (the Faithless of The Apocalypse are notably immune to this). He also carries a sword which is his 'Slayer Weapon', which he can 'power up' to deliver an electric shock (this also works with his hand). His angelic heritage makes him partially telepathic, allowing him to mentally communicate with other telepaths, as well as imprint visions and powerful emotions. When severely hurt or enraged he can unleash a 'psychic scream' that can be felt thousands of miles away. His infernal heritage gives him certain more destructive powers when enraged (flaming fists/sword, stuff like that). His eyes glow red when he's angry and, even when calm, his pupils have a small whirlwind of fire in the centre.

Weapons: His sword is just a sword, though it is quite old. He also once used a matched pair of pistols called the Eyes of God, which are more advanced than current technology can produce. No one knows where they came from. Since losing his hand, he is unable to fire them properly (i.e. as a pair) and one now nominally belongs to Dante. He hasn't bothered with them in some time, suggesting his sword has replaced them as his favoured weapon.

Allies: In TCW, Darkness's closest ally has always been Freya, with whom he shares a strange bond. The two are clearly attracted to one another, but have never acted on it. She is a werewolf, which may be a factor. Darkness is also accompanied by twelve werewolf bodyguards from Freya's village known as The Children. They are Gwen (the leader), Gawain (her cocky technophile brother), Galadd (huge and not too bright), Cai and Peredur (best friends and wrestling fans), Tilpin (the healer), Lir (Freya's cousin and closest friend), Eoin, Ogier, Hruod and Huon (twins) and Llenllawag (moody teenager, adopted by Darkness as a Neophyte Shadow Slayer). Revenant is also never far from Darkness and The Children. A half-vampire (dhampyr), she is a troubled adolescent with a sharp wit and sharper tongue. Sardonic and cynical, she is even better than Freya at bringing Darkness down to earth. Like Llenlleawg she has become a Shadow Slayer. Finally, Darkness can call upon the Order of Shadow Slayers, currently engaged in a secret war against the Ordo Draco and The Apocalypse, to deal with any serious threats.

Entrance:



As "Fear of the Dark" plays, the view cuts to a shot of Darkness's locker room door. It opens, and Darkness steps from the shadows, his title belt around his waist. As his fans chant along to the music, Darkness walks through the corridors of the arena before reaching the gorilla position.

The song kicks in and a huge pyro erupts from the stage. Darkness strides through the flames, silhouetted in the orange glow. As he strides to the ring, flames streak down the side of the ramp, framing him in fire. He enters the ring, ignoring its occupants and mounts the turnbuckle, raising his Heavyweight Championship above his head as the ethereal chanting continues.
