Haha.
That's what I use instead.
Actually, you know why I think 'lol' is so prevelant? It's because, when not face to face, you can't rely on body language, and it's surprising how much communication is based on that. For that reason, 'lol' (or in my case 'haha') is mostly a way of indicating approval - the equivelant of smiling in a real life conversation.
The fact that 'lol' has come to denote that though is sort of silly, since it's evidently not 'laughing out loud'. That's why I prefer my understated little 'haha'.

Agreed (ok anger issues have blown over). "lol" probably pisses me off beacuse it's lazy and fakes an intellectual disposition that the writer of "lol" obviously doesn't have.
A "Haha" or as I may have told a guy on Magic The gathering Online who asked me what he should say "How about shutting the fuck up?" is prefreable.
Still, I hate the fucking acronym.

The way I see it, 'lol' is probably a step above a smiley face to denote agreement. At least with 'haha' though it means that I'm a) writing what I'm more-or-less doing (i.e. laughing slightly/smiling) and b) makes it easier to show when I actually am laughing ('hahahaha') rather than something like lol x 1000, lmao, rofl or (God help us...) roflmao.

yeah, that's how it sounds.
Somewhere in Newport. I wouldn't try tracking him down, that place is as good for your health as Manchester.

Newport, eh?
He shouldn't be doin' that chatspeak business. Fucking using "lol"s and "rofl"s... he shouldn't be doin' it. Whereabouts in Newport? I'm gonna sort out this syntactic cripple once and for all; this dirty, no good, evil alphabetical FUCK-PIG.
