About the hero: It's good Matt, looks great.
About the backgrounds: I don't know which program you did him in but in Photoshop and I would assume in Paintshop pro too ther is the option of making a transparent background.
In Photoshop (that I use) you just make a selection when creating the picture and make it transparent.
